about kile and bibtex

Does anyone know why, if the /usr/share/texmf contains the proper bibtex 
styles and bibtex is installed as a dependency of kile, kile itself cannot 
run a pdflatex or a latex command that finds such natbib styles?

Running a Kile / Settings / System Check reveals that bibtex can be run but 
fails a simple check. Did anyone figure out what's going on?
