It sounds to me like you have a VPN (Virtual Private Network).  It used 
to be that way for me, and I had to provide a username and password.  My 
setup has changed (and will change again in a couple of weeks) and I 
don't think I can help you as I don't have a VPN anymore, but you might 
want to google that.
