How do I enable root login?

I agree with you partially.  I was not aware of the sudo -i (I should 
read the man pages more often).  However, there are times when you have 
to do quite of bit in a row.  It's not that big of deal to type sudo, 
and it does prevent you from making mistakes.  I don't think it's 
necessary to debate the issue.

It is possible to allow root logins from KDE, but it is highly dangerous 
and I have not researched how to do it.  A much better way is to use the 
"Edit as Root" action from konqueror.  It works well.  If one needs to 
run something as root, they can always press alt-f2 and type kdesu 
followed by whatever command is desired.  Perhaps that information will 
help Robert.
