It is indeed a pain. KDE 3.5.3 is also like that. You installed amarok
from the regular repository. Most likely you have 1.3, not 1.4. The
new version adds features, but it also has bugs. That's probably the
reason it isn't in the main repository.
One of the things that will help keep your system current is to enable
the backports repository. If you do that, all your installed
applications will be updated (when you do an update) to the newest
version that is available for (k)ubuntu. Keep in mind however that some
of the new packages can break your system. That's why they're in a
different repository.
