grep is the command I have been using for over 20 years to search in files.

A few tips:

1) search as root (sudo grep ...) - otherwise you may get all kinds of
messages about files and folders you don't have access to.
2) if you learn how "regular expressions" work, you will be able to use grep
in very powerful ways
3) there are lots of valuable options, -R to recurse through folders is one
you will definitely want to use.
