Do: telnet localhst smtp

I bet it says connection refused.

postfix, in Federico's instruction, is the SMTP part (I personally think
postfix is too much tool for the job, and use masqmail - in either case you
need either a "mail-transfer-agent" for fetchmail to deliver its mail to
your local port 25, or you need an MDA (procmail, maildrop) and have to
configure fetchmail to deliver mail to that program.
