I think that konqueror guesses the type. The only setting I have ever made is 
in "Control Center"=>"Internet & Network"=>"Connection Preferences" where I 
enable passive mode and disable "Mark partially uploaded files".

If you want konqueror to look more like a "classic" FTP client you can select 
"Window"=>"Split window left/right" and "View"=>"View mode"=>"Text view".

Then you can have your local computer on one side and the remote computer on 
the other side.
