usb_set_configuration: Operation not permitted

I just upgraded to Dapper from Breezy today, and now I am having problems
hooking up my Creative Zen Nomad. Under Breezy I was able to install and run
KZen Explorer just fine (though I had to do it from source, since it would
never install for me through Adept); however, when I try to run KZenExplorer
now under Dapper, I get the following error message:
usb_set_configuration: Operation not permitted
I've seen on various forums that I can get around this by running kzenexplorer
as root, but I don't want to have to do that. I've also seen that I can copy
some nomad configuration files into the /etc/hotplug directory, but there is
no such directory under Dapper.
Other USB devices, such as my mouse and my Palm Pilot, work just fine under
Dapper.
How can I resolve this problem? I need my podcasts!
