Aye, do that.  Because I had this problem once before.

What was happening is that my desktop enviornment (UDE) had royally
kicked the can and murdered X11 just before its own suicide.  If this
is happening with KDE the only thing that fatal I can think of would
be a malconfigured graphics card.  To rectify this without a desktop
enviornment is easy if you're not afraid of the CLI.  Do a console
login and then su root.

I ended up needing to just change to a different desktop enviornment
(in this case just sticking with KDE).

Tell us what Xorg.0.log says - that was very very revealing when I had
my problem.  If it's telling you things that have the string Qt in
them you may need to reconfigure the Qt libraries - they are not happy
when malconfigured, I can tell you that!
