K3b permissions issues.

I have been happily burning DVDs and CDs using K3b and my laptop's burner. Recently the hardware has broken so I got an internal LiteOn DVD burner (one for a desktop PC), and put it in an external USB housing. I connect it and it is recognized and auto mounted as sd0 or whatever. It works absolutely wonderfully for everything from reading a CD to writing a DL DVD...  except oftentimes when I press the burn button in K3b it tells me I don't have the permissions and I should correct it by running K3b setup. So I run this and it doesn't really change any settings and so K3b still gives me the same message. Even restarting the computer doesn't solve it and sometimes if I tinker long enough it works again. I can completely bypass the error by starting K3b as root, but I don't particularly like this or even consider it a solution.

Hoping someone can offer a better solution please?
