KDM won't allow login (not accepting password)

Did you try installing kde-desktop? Also, in kdm, what is available in
menu -> session-type ?
This all looks to me like kdm is trying to start either a kde session
while kde is not fully installed or trying to load in another obscure
mode, but not in gnome mode.
Try to select another session type.
