"connecting" two computers is ambiguous, so I will try to guess at
what you mean and give you solutions:
1. Passing files between two computers.
There is a protocol called file transfer protocol (ftp) that does
exactly this. Further, there is an encryption layer that can be added
to FTP in order to make it more secure. This latter option is what I
suggest. The encryption layer is called SSH. In order to connect the
two computers, you have to choose one of them to be the "server".
Since the desktop is likely to be on and connected to the network more
often than the laptop, I suggest choosing the desktop. All that is
needed to have the desktop configured is to have the ssh program
running in the background. Please follow this and write back if you
have problems:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SSHHowto
It covers transferring files as well.
2. Remotely controlling either the desktop or the laptop with the other
In order to do this, you need a program running in the background of
the computer to be controlled (which will be called the server).
Again, there are a couple of solutions to this. The most common is a
technology called vnc. The controlled computer must have the vnc
server program running in the background and the controlling computer
must use a vnc client to connect to the controlled computer. Follow
this guide:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VNC
The other solution is a newer technology called freenx. It also
requires the controlled computer to have a freenx server program
running and the controlling computer to use a freenx client to connect
to the controlled computer. Follow this guide:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FreeNX
Again, if you have any questions regarding these guides, write back.
