Hi Eduard
I have a AMD 64 X2 stationary. I don't know what programs you want to run, but
there is a lot of programs to choose from. I think many of the most popular
programs and file formats are 64-bit compatible by now. I am using the
2.6.15-26-amd64-generic kernel and most of my applications and desktop system
seems actually more stable than in the 32-bit version. This, however, might
be because I had give KDE a few extra tweaks on my 32-bit.
I think I can say that if you have very special programs you are intending to
run, you may have to do a bit of compiling yourself for the 64-bit version,
but you can expect very much of the generally popular software to work on 64
bit. Laptops is a bit of an issue here, since they are known to have quite a
few components on the hardware side that may be custom.
I guess it may be an issue to get all components on a high-end laptop working
under linux, regardless of 32 or 64 -bit, but that 64 bit may require a
little extra work as there is not many 64-bit laptops around yet.
