canoscan 3000f

just inherited a canoscan 300f - in uncertain physical condition.

lsusb shows the correct device.

on power up the light shows and the head moved correctly.

in gimp (for example) attemtp to select the device with e.g. xsane failed  
to find the scanner.

I have sane-backend installed.

any suggestions about where to start would be appreciated...
