Can anyone help with suspend/hibernate on an old T-series Thinkpad?

I have Klaptop installed. It does suspend and hibernate, but I cannot
get the machine to resume. I've tried all sorts of buttons, every key
on the board. I even switched the on/off button to resume in BIOS. No
luck.

Are there any command line scripts which may help to reveal the problem?
I have installed the Thinkpad laptop ctrl program, but have no idea how
to bind it to power management.

It has worked before under Debian (sarge?) by manually running "echo 3
> .../sleep"

So it is possible on this machine.

Thanks,

Marcus
