Q: replacement for kalbum?

2 KDE based options you may wan to look at are:
gwenview and digikam.

Gwenview is a great photo browser, and if you also install kipi-plugins, it 
can do some editing, rotating, and album exporting (html, upload to flikr, 
etc)

digikam, and digikam plugins is another good Photo management tool. If you 
have a supported camera,downloading your pictures to is an option that is 
displayed when you plug the camera in. It is very mature and has a ton o 
features.

I use gwenview mostly as i don't make albums often, and prefer its browsing 
capabilities,as that is its strongest suit.
