I like VLC media player.  I am not entirely sure about how to make it 
play to the television.  I suppose it would go out through and S-VHS 
connection.  But someone wiser and more skilled than me, will need to 
help you with that.

To install VLC:
- add the following lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list   file
         # VLC Media Player
         deb http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/debian sarge main
         deb-src http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/debian sarge main

- run the following two commands from your command prompt
         sudo apt-get update
         sudo apt-get install vlc libdvdcss2
