Now that you mention it, I think I might have run into this problem myself.  
Out of the box Feisty had

  /etc/alternatives/vim -> /usr/bin/vim.tiny

and I changed (via update-alternatives) it to

  /etc/alternatives/vim -> /usr/bin/vim.basic

I don't recall installing extra packages, but I might have.  Maybe I installed 
the packages, and then had to update the alternatives too.  Or something.  I 
don't know.  It's definitely fixable though.
