Ben,
When I installed Kubuntu, it was over an existing Debian installation.
During the Kubuntu install, it used all of the already formatted
partitions. How does this relate to your post? Because now I never I
have to do an upgrade - I just do a complete new install. The benefit
of this is that my /home directory is never overwritten. I get the
benefits of a fresh install without having to go through some data
backup process.
Perhaps some of the other list members can give you more information
on the process of partitioning. I am no expert - it was done
automatically for me when I installed Debian. However, I know that
you are given some partitioning options during a new install. Again,
the other members on the list would probably be more knowledgeable.
