I agree with your position in general, and I wouldn't use the term "shady"
either. However, the printer I wrestled with actually had Tux printed right
on the box, and that was pretty deceptive of them. It came with an old
binary driver for a version of Red Hat that was obsolete at the time of
purchase, and that was all they felt they needed to do to claim "Works with
Linux" prominently.
I wouldn't go as far as shady, but I thought they had misappropriated poor Tux
for sure. I didn't do my homework on that one, and got burned.
I hope they're no longer printing Tux on their boxes.
