I have similar behavior with Gutsy on my Compaq laptop (can't remember
the model number, and don't have it with me right now).

With only one user the suspend worked the first time when closing the
lid, but never again.

Exactly the same behavior here with only one user.

I quickly scanned the bug reports and found several reports of failure
to suspend when lid is closed.
