unwanted removal of nvidia

I know I am not answering your question, but it seems to me - I wouldn't
swear it, but I seem to remember so - that nvidia-setting is already
installed with nvidia-glx. You just have to run nvidia-settings in a
terminal and there you have it.

I also put a command in the menu so that I can run it the "easy way".

In a way, if nvidia-settings would appear in the menu from the very
beginning, any problem like the one you describe could be avoided.
