afaik, adept/synaptic/apt-get are all using the same database.

aptitude maintains its own database to keep track of what has been
automatically installed, so that it can remove it again if not needed.

I suppose that's the point - "installer" is easy to use, partly because it
only provides a limited subset of programs to install.  "manager" lets you
install anything that is available in a .deb, from anywhere.
