Hello David

The help I can offer you is only at a moderate newbie level - I hope it
will be useful for you.

> Asus M2N-E SLI motherboard

My laptop is not exactly the same, however similar: Asus P4M, 2GHz,
512MB, 20GB, sound card "Crystal WDM Audio".

Kubuntu Gutsy runs quite well on my Asus - in general, the interaction
between this OS and most of the lap top's hard ware components is quite
smooth.
But as in your case, the sound settings are a point of attention. The
sound OUTPUT has become OK quite quickly. The sound INPUT is still not
completely OK - though I managed to reduce it's CR-CR-CR sound to a
minimum expectable for this moment. For all I know, this applies for all
software in which sound input is relevant: especially Skype and Audacity.

With respect to K-MIX, there are several options. Go to the K-MIX icon -
one of the icons right down under. Or go to K-MIX - multimedia - KMIXER.
If you LEFT-CLICK on the K-MIXER icon, you can regulate or mute the
sound input or go the general KMIX panel. However, if you RIGHT-click on
the same icon, you will see several other option: e.g. selection of the
master channel and another gate way to the KMIX panel.
Go no to the KMIX panel. There you will see 3 tabs: OUTPUT, INPUT and
SWITCHES. Go to INPUT. I have put the mic slide there at it 's lowest
level possible. However, the mic. function is NOT mute: the green button
above is bright green. And the recording function DOES work: the red
button below the slide is bright red. For the rest there are several
options available via the 3 tabs.

However, never rely on K-MIX only. See below.

I think you are right. So far, I have been experimenting via three
approaches:
the KMIX dealt with above;
ALSAMIXER - via the Konsole terminal program.
SOUND SYSTEM - via K-START- system settings - computer administration.

To finish this message - I would like to point you to an interesting
link that I found via the KUBUNTU FORUM:
the so-called "Comprehensive Sound Problem Solutions Guide",
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449
This is a very extensive sound software settings check-list. When I
manage to find time to go through this list, I will briefly share my
experiences via this mailing list. However it may be, this check-list
might be relevant for you too.

Wishing you all the best, kindest regards, ....

Bas.
