Drive icons on desktop

At one time the icons appeared and never left.....now they only appear when 
the CD/DVD drive is mounted.  I know this has been addressed before, and I 
did enable the appropriate kcontrol settings to have icons shown all the 
time, but to no avail.

The only workaround I can think of is to make links to my desktop and disable 
the relevant kcontrol modules.  Seems to me that there should be a setting 
widget buried deep in KDE or the OS that would sort this out.  

Any ideas?  If not I guess I will go with my workaround.
