Drive icons on desktop

Im not sure if this question is sarcastic or not, but I smiled either 
way......  (I appreciate that sort of humor).

I am not here referring to the CD/DVD icon, which does work "as advertised" 
but to the harddrive icons which should be fairly permanent on the desktop 
when kcontrol has them set to appear when mounted.  My original post failed 
to specify to which ones I was referring.
