user switching does not work in Kubuntu 7.10

Today (19th of December 2007) it suddenly worked! Certainly - I have automatic updates enabled and 
it seems like this corrected that problem.

I use /etc/crontab to run:
00 0-23/2 * * * root    apt-get update && apt-get -y dist-upgrade && ldconfig && dpkg --configure -a 
&& apt-get clean
