Generally speaking, that is a function of the broadband modem to establish a
connection to their system only, aka a protocol negotiation. Logging in is a
separate function, usually handled by a SOHO router like a linksys 4 porter.
If you are not using a router between your box and the modem, then you will
need to get into the networking settings and enable 'dhcp', giving it those
username and password details. That is not something I'm familiar with on a
buntu system as my home network does use a router and it handles all those
details, and does NAT so my home network addressing is at fixed addresses,
all by the hosts file in the 192.168.xx.xx address range, a much more secure
arrangement. On the one kubuntu box I have, I gave it a fixed address in
that block at install time and have never had to touch it. Using dhcp, be
sure and enable the firewall too.
