It's probably really 640x480.  I haven't seen this in a long time, but when I 
first switched from a CRT to an LCD, I had this problem.  It wouldn't work in 
any other mode, and of course it looked absolutely HORRIBLE.

The solution involved some ugly hacking in XF86Config-4, which dates the time 
at which I had the problem.  I'm afraid any knowledge I have about these 
matters is too far out of date to be of any use.
