I have often come across this problem when using older machines. What has 
worked for me is to change default depth from 32 or 24 to 16 in Xorg.conf. I 
always blamed lack of enough Video ram, But somebody has since corrected me 
and said that Vesa mode will not work on 24 bit. Whatever the reason, it 
works for me everytime. Shhhhhhh, it also works for that other operating 
system - reduce the colour depth and get greater screen res.
