Can't seem to change default browser

The KDE Settings for Default Browser will only affect the behavior of KDE 
apps, naturally. And since Thunderbird is not a KDE app, it doesn't follow 
KDE's rules. You'll experience this with other non-KDE apps as well if you 
use them. 

One way of solving this is to set the default X server web browser (not just 
the default KDE browser) with this command:

sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser

This will give you a numbered list of installed browsers in your system. 
Choose the number of the browser you want to use as the default.
