Edgy and mysql 5.0 -- server won't run

I installed MySQL server 5.024a-9 via adept, along
with related packages.  Whenever I try to start the
server I get this error in syslog

mysqld got signal 4;

This was after I finally got Nvidia drivers to run;  I
don't suppose that could have anything to do with it?

Should I be getting MySQL binaries straight from MySQL
rather than via ubuntu's package management system?
