Your XP partition is using the NTFS filesystem, which Linux does not talk to
very well; Linux can read from NTFS filesystems fine, but writing to them is
spotty at best. Someone has been developing an NTFS kernel module, but it's
experimental and comes with plenty of warnings.
Whenever I choose to have a partition shared between a Windows OS and Linux OS
on one computer, I set up that partition as FAT32. I usually make that
partition pretty small, since FAT32 is not as efficient as either NTFS or
ext3, but both OSes talk to it just fine. I actually haven't done this for
quite awhile, because I very rarely use Windows anymore, and because I have a
fileserver where I keep most of my stuff anyway.
