Typing oddball characters in kubuntu

Use KCharSelector.  Then you can copy the oddball characters.  From
there you can use shift-insert (the one above the "delete" key) to
insert things into a terminal window.  IIRC, that key combo inserts
for Gnome-Terminal and xterm as well as Konsole.
