kicker not loading: how do I troubleshoot?

I have had kicker die many times on many computers. I think it is a big bug
than has been there for at least 4 years.
What I do now is to click alt-F1 and then right click on the kicker that
does not come up (it the past it did not!) and then go to settings and reset
it to come up in th middle not the left hand side. This seem to happen to me
know about one time a month and never in the same way. I have no idea what
makes it happen. BTW this is on more that one computer and with clean
installs.
