Do you have sshd installed and running? You can check it with the command

ps ax|grep sshd|grep -v grep

Have a look at <http://ubuntuforums.org>, <https://help.ubuntu.com/>, 
<http://tldp.org/>.

Either you need a dns server which knows about the host names in your 
local network or you can put the hostnames into the file /etc/hosts 
(see "man hosts" for the syntax).
