From pkaplan1 at comcast.net Fri Jun 1 00:58:29 2007 From: pkaplan1 at comcast.net (Paul Kaplan) Date: Thu, 31 May 2007 20:58:29 -0400 Subject: speaker/volume Problem Message-ID: <200705312058.30166.pkaplan1@comcast.net> I am currently running Kubuntu Feisty on a Thinkpad T43, having recently moved up from Edgy.  My external speakers, which are attached through the headphone jack, have their own volume control. On Edgy (and Dapper), I could use the Thinkpad mute button to turn off the internal speakers and use only the external speakers.  The external speaker volume was controlled independently by both kmix and the hardware volume control.  If the internal speakers were un-muted (through the Thinkpad button), their volume was controlled by Thinkpad volume buttons and kmix.  So kmix controlled the system volume at the software level, and each set of speakers had its own independent hardware volume control. With Feisty, the Thinkpad buttons control kmix directly, not the Thinkpad speakers.  As a result, I can't turn off the Thinkpad speakers (and their marginal sound quality) and still use the external speakers.  If I use the Thinkpad mute button, it mutes the entire sound system.  As a result, in order to get sound out of the external speakers, I need some volume on the internal speakers. I don't want to permanently inactivate the internal speakers since I do use them when I'm not connected to the dock. How can I restore the old situation where the Thinkpad sound buttons are controlling only the internal speakers, not kmix? Have you played with the mixer portion of KMix at all? There is a tab labled "switches" in the window that may do what you need. You can also add a "Sound Mixer" applet to your panel that will put some of the options of KMix onto your panel in the form of tiny sliders...this has been useful to me. The problem seems to be that the Thinkpad buttons control the kmix master channel (whcihever is set) in Feisty, but the hardware only in prior versions. Message-ID: <200706010918.35539.prlewis@letterboxes.org> Hi all, I'm a big user of Kontact (for mail, calendar, contacts etc), and usually keep it running in the system tray all the time. I'm experiencing some annoyances when starting up though. Assuming it was running in the system tray when I logged off, it gets saved to the session and then restored when I log in next time, just like everything else. But, the session manager or Kontact seems to be getting confused about whether it was Kontact or Kmail which was running. Often, I end up with both a Kontact window which is basically just an empty container (nothing is running in it), and a separate Kmail window (detached from Kontact). The only way to get back to a proper embedded Kmail in Kontact is to close both and re-start Kontact. Does anyone know anything about this? Cheers! Pete. All has been fine since then. I too was thinking about going back to separate apps, but it seems a shame to have to. All of them (I think) will sit in the tray independently, at least. I am using a disconnected IMAP server as the resource for my calendar and contacts though. I guess that something is making a request from that. But... I can't see that anything else is loading before Kontact which might require it. Except... the KOrganizer Reminder Daemon? Could it be this? If so, can I change the order in which they're loaded at startup? > I am sorry but I don't have a solution to this. I guess the new akonadi > framework will solve this issue. Yes, korganizer (korgac is the actual program, iirc) will start up and check your calendar when you first log in. That can be disabled, somewhere. I don't think you can do much about the ordering, though - short of telling it you don't want it run at login, then starting it manually with a script. -- derek From ejazzkatt at gmail.com Fri Jun 1 14:18:31 2007 From: ejazzkatt at gmail.com (Eric Jackson) Date: Fri, 1 Jun 2007 14:18:31 +0000 Subject: =?ISO-2022-JP?B?U3lzdGVtIBskQiIqGyhCIEFkbWluaXN0cmE=?= =?ISO-2022-JP?B?dGlvbiAbJEIiKhsoQiBOZXR3b3JraW5nPz8/?= Message-ID: I was just reading the docs on networking from this link. https://help.ubuntu.com/7.04/internet/C/networking.html It says to configure my networking I should select System → Administration → Networking. There's plenty of people here willing to help out. Andrew --------------- Eduard: Make sure your external monitor is connected and displaying (even badly). Since you mention that you can read it, I will go on the premise that you are already there. Then: click the K Menu, click "System Settings" click ""monitor and display" under computer administration Under the first tab "Size, Orientation, Positioning" be sure the slide bar near the bottom is set where you need it to be. I think Kubuntu automatically assigns a default value that may or may not be correct. Check the refresh rate to the right of that also. Your external monitor manual should have the value you will need, or it may be on the menu of the monitor itself. Don't change it unless you need to, it can make your display unreadable. Then, select the "Hardware" tab near the top of the window that opens from there, you should be able to select your monitor and go from that point. Note that you may have to select the "Administrator Mode" button and enter your password in order to make any changes. I have no idea if this will stay at the values you set, or if it will revert when you shut down and repower. It may be fine for an external monitor, but be unreadable for the internal monitor on your laptop. All I can suggest is that you try it. I have had good success with OpenVZ, but if you intend running that on a destkop machine with an X GUI and all you may need to have experience building and configuring your own kernels.[1] It has the key advantage that you run only one kernel and hardware interface; it gives you the equivalent of a "super-chroot" that allows the other VM to run with minimal overhead. I only use it on servers, but this mail is passing out via one of them. Regards, Daniel Footnotes: [1] At least some of the OpenVZ kernels didn't have sufficient support for sound and DRI to qualify as "desktop" by most definitions. -- Digital Infrastructure Solutions -- making IT simple, stable and secure Phone: 0401 155 707 email: contact at digital-infrastructure.com.au http://digital-infrastructure.com.au/ From colin at spudulike.me.uk Sat Jun 2 07:29:58 2007 From: colin at spudulike.me.uk (Colin Murphy) Date: Sat, 02 Jun 2007 08:29:58 +0100 Subject: Moving from Evolution to Kmail In-Reply-To: <1180634747.21249.8.camel@ubuntu-desktop.Belkin> References: <1180634747.21249.8.camel@ubuntu-desktop.Belkin> Message-ID: <1180769398.21249.25.camel@ubuntu-desktop.Belkin> On Thu, 2007-05-31 at 19:05 +0100, Colin Murphy wrote: > I would now like to move back to KMail [from Evolution]. Well, I don't know if that really was reckless, but maybe there are not that many people who have moved from Evolution to Kmail. As I have never used Evolution, I can only speculate on one point, i.e. recovering your mail. As far as I know, Evolution stores mail in mbox format, which is one big text file per mail folder. Kmail uses maildir by default, but it can use mbox as well. You should rename your mail folders in Evolution first, if there is a name confilct with existing mail folders in Kmail. Then close both Evolution and Kmail and copy your Evolution mail file(s) to the directory /home//.kde/share/apps/kmail (sorry, can't tell you where you find your Evolution mail files). On the next start, Kmail should find your old mail.
