Update Problem

I was told to type in su and it would ask for a password to Administration. 
When I did that, I got the word Password?.  When I typed in my password, it 
rejected the password, so I suppose it is because I never created a specific 
password for Administration.  At some time in the past, I located a button 
on the bar at the top of my desktop that requested a password (I thought for 
Administration).  When I entered my password, I was allowed into the area 
where changes to the computer are made.  After two failed installations, I 
cannot find that choice and don't know how it was originally created.  I 
would very much like to work from the terminal, just to become more adept at 
using a computer, however, in my existing financial situation I cannot 
affort the schooling and I don't know where to find what I need to learn, 
and I am totally alone and have no one to collaborate with.  Thank you for 
answering me.  It is an improvement.  It is the first time anyone has 
responded that I know of.  If I type in sudo, what happens is anathama to 
me.  I don't know how to proceed with what I get.  I know you are very busy 
and I appologize for taking so much of your time, however, I also am very 
greatful for the help you have given me now.  It answers one of the why's.
