Update Problem

I was told to type in su and it would ask for a password to Administration.
When I did that, I got the word Password?. When I typed in my password, it
rejected the password, so I suppose it is because I never created a specific
password for Administration. At some time in the past, I located a button
on the bar at the top of my desktop that requested a password (I thought for
Administration). When I entered my password, I was allowed into the area
where changes to the computer are made. After two failed installations, I
cannot find that choice and don't know how it was originally created. I
would very much like to work from the terminal, just to become more adept at
using a computer, however, in my existing financial situation I cannot
affort the schooling and I don't know where to find what I need to learn,
and I am totally alone and have no one to collaborate with. Thank you for
answering me. It is an improvement. It is the first time anyone has
responded that I know of. If I type in sudo, what happens is anathama to
me. I don't know how to proceed with what I get. I know you are very busy
and I appologize for taking so much of your time, however, I also am very
greatful for the help you have given me now. It answers one of the why's.
