xemacs and fonts - SOLVED

I solved the problem creating the file
.Xresources
(also softlinked to .Xdefaults since I couldn't understand which one is 
actually used)
with the following content:

! This is the font used in the menu bar
XEmacs*fontSet: -adobe-helvetica-bold-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
XEmacs*menubar*FontSet: -adobe-helvetica-bold-r-normal-*-12-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

I applied the changes with
xrdb ~/.Xdefaults

To select the font you actually want to use you can use
xfontsel
