Make sure you delete ~/user/.vmware and ~/user/vmware  (note that one is a 
hidden file and starts with a "." 

It is probably too late for this one, but in the future, the vmware tarball  
comes with an uninstaller script, I think it is uninstallvmware.pl, but in 
any case it will be obvious and it works very well, removing the traces of 
 the package that lead to the condition you describe on the next install.
