KDE problem - Only desktop wallpaper visible

why do we assume he has Gnome?

You could do that in a console.  My bet is that restarting kdm will fix it.
If not, make sure all user sessions are terminated - kill them from the
console if necessary. I've had this happen when the kded process gets
stuck.
