Not quite what you asked for, but if you have a wheel mouse, you can hover
over the speaker button in your panel and raise/lower the volume by turning
the mouse wheel. I *think* (I'm not sure, since I'm away from my Kubuntu
box at the moment) it gives better resolution - perhaps good enough for
what you want.
