At least Amarok detects my Ipod shuffle automatically.

However, you might need a high-power USB port to make it work properly  
(check manuals?). For example, I had to change my cable to another USB  
connector until it started working. Low-power ports were on the  
front-panel, while the high-power ports were on the back side of my tower.

Have you tested your player in an Ubuntu machine? If it works in Ubuntu,  
it also should work in Kubuntu.
