Not crazy!  Yes, it is, but iirc (haven't had a desktop machine in years)
the simple apps to do it don't get installed on a desktop.  Still ACPI is
there, and acpid, and it's a fairly simple matter of
editing /etc/acpi/events/ and the scripts in /etc/acpi/ to make it handle
things like your power button as a request to hibernate.  Or, if
powermanagement-interface is installed you can use pmi.
