I understand why you have done so but what we would like you to test is 
to set up the gmail account for sending as smtp gateway. You find how on

If that works, given it is exactly the same method as your ISP should 
use, then your ISP has some sort of problem. If it does not work then I 
would say it is your installation of KMail that is problematic somehow.
