Automatic reconnect to wireless network

Am I misunderstanding something here? I keep my desktop machine 
upstairs, connected to the internet via a cable to a router.

Downstairs my wife uses her laptop, connected to the same router by 
wireless. They both work fine, and often at the same time. I have never 
had any problems and didn't expect any.

Should I be surprised?
