How to fix time?

We had a long power cut here last week when I was away.
Now that I'm back, I notice that my clock is wrong... and the stupid thing
is that I can't figure out how to force it to use NTP (which is what it was
using before the power cut; I have no idea why it's no longer using it).
Can someone please post instructions? I've done what I thought were the
obvious things -- "Adjust Data & Time", but the option to use NTP is greyed
out, even if I enter administrator mode. Similarly, I see that the ntp
service isn't running any more, but I don't see any way to turn it on (I
have set it to start at boot, but that doesn't seem to work. I have tried
grepping "dmesg" and /var/log/messages for "ntp" but there are no entries).
So if someone can explain how I can turn ntp back on, I would very much
appreciate it.
