The Speed Factor -- Kubuntu vs. Gentoo

Why not just set up your machine to duel boot and install Gentoo? It is not
that hard with the precompiled stuff. Installing Gentoo from the bottom up
with all the tweaks is the best way that I know of to really get to know the
guts or Linux. In the mean time you have your nice Kubuntu there for you
when you need it.

Also I don't have any proof that Gentoo is faster but it is true that you
will end up with many less background process running and that can't hurt.
Also I have found boot times to be GREATLY reduce with a custom kernel that
does not have all the blot to run every computer out there. The other side
of the story is that you will end up spending more time tweaking Gentoo than
you will ever save with fast boots and 10% faster software. You will also
come to see why Kubuntu is go good and loved by those of us who don't want
to spend their lives tweaking so stupid setting.

One last idea, if you want all the gentoo goodness without the hassles get
Sabayon and dual boot with it.

A quote from Distrowatch.com current news letter. Great Linux web site BTW

Almost a year has passed since the initial release of
Sabayon<http://distrowatch.com/sabayon>Linux 3.4, a Gentoo-based
distribution featuring the absolute bleeding edge
in Linux and open source technologies. But while the release frequency of
this distribution has slowed down considerably since its early days, work on
the upcoming version 3.5 continues as normal. In fact, Sabayon Linux 3.5 is
now getting very close to release time: "After months and months and months
of hard work, I am happy to say that Sabayon Linux 3.5 final will enter the
final beta testing stage within 48 hours and will stay there for a couple of
weeks. All I can say is that the difference between 3.4 and 3.5 is really
really huge. During this period we've worked out all the concerns we
collected about 3.4, like binary packages (Entropy), security updates, ease
of use, speed, hardware support, and we are now ready to steadily enter the
top 5 distro arena. After 3.5, expect our exciting and impressive release
cycle to be back, 4.0, 4.1, 4.2 and so on!"
