Sorry you're having that problem, but I must say that I am happy with
nvidia on hardy. I am not having you're logout black screen problem and
I am not having any problem with hibernation, yet.
I had to do a fresh install and am using jfs for a file system instead
of ext3 because the 2.6.24-16 kernel had boot problems after upgrading
and broke my filesystem with an aggressive e2fsck. But, the 2.6.24-17
kernel works fine. Also, I prefer to use the nvidia 173.08 from nvidia
site instead of ubuntu nvidia.
One of the things the upgrade notes recommend is to allow the upgrade
manager to replace all your configuration files with the new ones from
the developers. This is inconvenient because you'll have to reset some
of your personal settings afterward. Maybe you didn't do this and have
some old configs around that are acting up. One way to check is to
search through the files in /etc/ looking for files with a period or
dash and the word dpkg or dpkg-config tacked on .. this could be the new
config file that never got installed. One quick way to search is open a
terminal and enter
~$ sudo find /etc/ -iname '*dpkg*'
