Help on TV - usb Avermedia A828 for ubuntu 8.10

Hi everybody.

I got a problem -well, actually several- since I installed the new
release 8.10 for kubuntu.
The usb television card Avermedia A828 is not working anymore because
I cannot install the drivers. It turns out that the drivers were
prepared and tested for ubuntu 7.10

but there is some people that have struggled with this and offer some
patches to solve the problem http://backstep.net/aver/
Could you tell how should I manipulate the patches? Are they meant to
be used during compilation? If so, could you please indicate me where
can I learn about the process?
